How to Connect Echo and Alexa to Wi-Fi

The first thing you need to do is put your device online by connecting it to your Wi-Fi network. Before connecting the Echo and Alexa to Wi-Fi, you will need to have the name and password of your Wi-Fi network handy. So, follow these steps and you will talk to Alexa in no time.

How to connect Alexa to WiFi the first time

If this is your first Alexa-enabled device, you may not need to perform steps 2-4 below. Instead, you will be asked to start the installation once the app has started.

  1. Enter your Amazon account credentials and press Sign in.
  2. If prompted, tap the Start button.
  3. Select the name associated with your Amazon account from the list provided or choose I am someone else and enter the correct name.
  4. Now you may be asked to authorize Amazon to access your Contacts and Notifications. This isn’t necessary to connect Alexa to Wi-Fi, so select Later or Allow based on your individual preferences.
  5. Tap the Alexa menu button, represented by three horizontal lines and located in the upper left corner. When the drop-down menu appears, choose the Settings option.
  6. Tap the Add new device button.
  7. Choose the appropriate device type from the list (e.g. Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus, Tap).
  8. Choose the specific model you want to set (in this example, we are choosing Echo Dot, 2nd generation).
  9. Connect your Alexa-enabled device to a power outlet and wait until the appropriate signifier is displayed, which will be explained in the app. If the device is already connected, you may need to hold down the Action button. For example, if you are setting up an Amazon Echo, the light ring on the top of the device should turn orange. Once you have determined that the device is ready, select the Continue button.
  10. Depending on the device, the app may now ask you to connect via your smartphone’s wireless settings. To do this, follow the instructions on the screen to connect via Wi-Fi to an Amazon network with a custom name (for example Amazon-75). As soon as the phone has been successfully connected to the device, you will hear a confirmation message and the app will automatically switch to the next screen.
  11. You can now view a confirmation message Connected to [device name]. If so, tap Continue.
  12. A list of available Wi-Fi networks will now be shown within the app itself. Select the network you wish to associate with your Alexa-enabled device and enter the password if required.
  13. The app screen may now read Preparing the [device name], accompanied by a progress bar.
  14. If the Wi-Fi connection was successfully established, you should now see a message indicating that your [device name] is now online.

Connect Echo and Alexa to Wi-Fi to a new network

If you have an Alexa device that was previously set up but must now be connected to a new Wi-Fi network or an existing network with a changed password, follows these steps.

  1. Touch the menu icon, then the Settings option.
  2. Tap Device settings, then choose the device whose Wi-Fi network you want to change.
  3. Tap Change, next to the Wi-Fi network.
  4. The configuration is now the same as above, starting from step 10.
