Find out how to stream music to your connected Google Home speaker without subscribing to a streaming service
To get the most out of your Google Home speaker, you’ll need to subscribe to a streaming service, such as Google Play Music, YouTube Music Premium, Deezer, or Spotify .
However, last year Google began updating its flagship speaker by finally making it compatible with Bluetooth.
In addition, since April 2019 Google Home has taken charge of the YouTube Music application , which is itself funded by advertising. Thus, this new formula gives you access to playlists with a specific genre but without being able to escape ads. This is still a good compromise, especially for occasional users.
Thanks to such updates, you can not only play music on another speaker but also, and most importantly, do it for free from a phone, tablet or a paired computer.
In this tutorial we explain how, besides going through the YouTube Music streaming service, listen to free music from your Google Home.
Listen to music via YouTube Music on your Google Home
As we told you earlier, thanks to the YouTube Music application it is now possible to listen to songs for free on your Google Home, so here’s how to do it:
If you’re on Android , just open the Google Home app and once on the homepage go to Add , tap Manage Services and then tap Music & Video . Finally, select YouTube Music “Free Service Available” .
If you’re on iOS , open Google Home and go to your account at the bottom right (circle with a guy inside), then Music , and finally select YouTube Music “Free Service Available” .
Note that its use is somewhat limited since you will not be able to choose specific titles but only a genre.
Create a playlist in Google Play Music
Google Play Music is a free application that can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or App Store .
However, without subscription to a subscription (from € 9.99), Google Home does not offer the ability to listen to music directly on the application. To benefit from free listening, the solution would be to play already recorded playlists.
To set up a playlist, open the app and in the music library look for a song you want to add.
Tap on the three dots on the right and select Add to playlist . Then go to New playlist , then name it. Finally, tap Create playlist .
Caster your music on your Google Home
Google Home supports Bluetooth and Chrome cast. So, if your phone, tablet or computer is too, you can use this feature.
To do this, first make sure your device and your Google Home speaker are connected to the same WiFi network. Then open your streaming app and tap the Cast icon , then select your Google Home to start playing.
Listen to streaming radio on your Google Home
Google Home lets you stream music from online radio services like RTL or NRJ. To activate it, simply say: “Ok Google, play [name of the radio station]”.
Feel free to download the TuneIN app ( Android / iOS ) for a wider choice of radios.
