How to Allow Chrome Access to Your Camera

Letting Chrome access your camera is relatively simple to do. However, no one can blame you if you are having difficulty. With that in mind, here’s how to allow Chrome access to your camera.

How To Allow Access To The Chrome Camera On PC Or Mac

Whether you’re a macOS or Windows user, allowing Chrome to access your camera is done the same way, via the Chrome app. Chrome’s apps for PC and Mac had some differences, but are now absolutely identical. Here’s how to allow camera / microphone access on your PC or Mac.

The easiest way to do this is to confirm only when asked. Open Chrome and go to a website that requires access to a microphone or camera. When asked, select Allow for the microphone and camera.

Sites on which you have allowed the use of the camera / microphone can record while you are on the site. However, the moment you switch tabs or start using another application, the page stops recording. Sites you have blocked will not be able to record using the camera or microphone.

If you happen to have blocked the use of a camera / microphone on a certain website when asked, you will not be asked to allow / block again. The site will automatically be denied access to the microphone or camera. However, you can change these settings.

  1. Tap the “Menu” icon
  2. Open the Chrome browser and go to the three-dot icon.
  3. Tap “Settings”
  4. In the menu that opens, select Settings.
  5. Tap “Site Settings”
  6. On the Settings tab, select Site Settings.
  7. Tap “Camera”
  8. Go to Camera or Microphone on the next screen. Here you can turn off the Ask before signing in option. However, if you care about your privacy, you will want to enable this feature.

If you’ve ever blocked a website from accessing your microphone or camera, they should be in the Block list. To remove them from this list, select the trash can icon to the right of the entry.

Now, once you visit the website in question again, you will be asked to allow it to use your microphone / camera. This time, click Allow.

Alternatively, click the website in the Block list. Then, go to Camera / Microphone in the Permissions list. Select Allow instead of Block and the site will be allowed access to the camera or microphone.

How To Allow Access To The Chrome Camera On An IOS Device

Like on computers, once you reach a website that requires access to the camera or microphone, you will be asked to allow or block access. Similarly, like on a PC / Mac device, if you block access to the camera / microphone, you won’t be prompted to do this automatically.

If you want to allow Chrome access to the camera or microphone:

  1. Go to Privacy, located in the Settings app.
  2. Tap “Camera”
  3. Find and select Camera from the list. If you’ve ever blocked the camera from accessing Chrome, you’ll find the Chrome entry in the list.
  4. Turn on the Chrome setting
  5. Flip the switch so Chrome can access your camera. The same goes for your microphone.

How To Allow Access To The Chrome Camera On An Android Device

Just like with iOS devices, Android devices also require camera / microphone permissions for Chrome. It’s very simple. The moment Chrome needs to use the camera or microphone, you’ll be prompted to allow or block it.

If you allow it, you are good to go. If you have blocked it, you will not be asked to allow / block it again. This will make you unable to use the camera / microphone on websites that require access.

Of course, there is a way to change this and it is very similar to the method with iOS. However, the location of these settings may differ from device to device when it comes to Android.

Here is an example that may be unique to some models. However, the principle is very similar to all Android devices.

  • Go to the Settings app.
  • Tap your privacy settings
  • Go to Privacy Protection or a similar sub-setting.
  • Select All permissions.
  • Tap “Camera”

From the next list, select Camera or Microphone. You’ll see a list of apps that are allowed access and a list of apps you’ve denied camera / microphone access.

  1. Tap “Chrome”
  2. Select Chrome from the list.
  3. Tap “Allow”
  4. So if you want to allow Chrome access to the camera or microphone, change the setting to Allow.
  5. Go back and the changes will be applied.

On Android models, however, unlike iOS devices, you can allow or block camera / microphone access to specific websites, just like on PC and Mac. To do this:

  1. Open Settings in Chrome
  2. Run the Chrome app and go to the three-dot icon.
  3. Tap “Settings”
  4. Tap it and then select Settings.
  5. Tap “Site Settings”
  6. Go to Site Settings.
  7. Tap “Camera”
  8. Go to Camera or Microphone.
  9. Enable camera access
  10. Touch to activate or deactivate access.

If there is a site in the Blocked list, tap the site, go to Access your camera / microphone and select Allow.

Alternatively, Android users can tap the “Apps” option from the device settings and go directly to Chrome to allow access to the camera and microphone.

Additional Faqs

WILL THE MICROPHONE BE ACTIVATED AT THE SAME TIME AS THE CAMERA?

Well this depends on the needs of the site / page. If a page you are visiting only requires access to the camera, it means that your device will not use the microphone function.

This is also true vice versa. However, some websites will use both, in which case the microphone will be activated at the same time as the camera. This, of course, provided you’ve previously allowed microphone / camera access.

HOW CAN I KNOW IF MY CAMERA IS ON?

Some devices tend to have an LED light that will indicate when the camera is on. However, most mobile devices don’t have this feature.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to check if your camera is turned on with such devices. Also, a more sophisticated cyber criminal will still find a way to turn off the LED indicator. Consulting an online security professional would be your best bet here. Blocking access to suspicious apps / sites is also a great idea.

HOW DO I DISABLE ACCESS TO THE CAMERA FROM THE ABOVE DEVICES?

As explained above, preventing or blocking access to apps and websites works in a similar way to allow them. Block settings tend to be very close, in terms of computer logic, to the allowed settings.

Just refer to the tutorial above and you will see how to disable camera and microphone access on the devices mentioned above.

SHOULD I TRUST CHROME WITH CAMERA ACCESS?

Keep in mind that while Chrome is definitely a trustworthy and reputable app, it still remains an internet browser.

Chrome will try to block you or at least warn you of suspicious websites, but you’re still pretty much on your own out there. If you’re a Chrome iOS user, you might just completely block access to the camera (and microphone) on Chrome.

If you are an Android user or log into Chrome from your computer, you can choose which websites you want to block and which ones you want to let through.

Regardless, as any online security professional will tell you, you shouldn’t trust anyone on the web.

Allow Chrome To Access The Camera

As you can see, allowing camera access to Chrome has been made simple and straightforward no matter what device you may be using. In terms of camera / microphone permissions, you get the same options on Windows, macOS, and Android OS.

However, as an iOS user, you may want to restrict access entirely, as there is no way to allow certain websites while blocking others.

Were you able to allow Chrome access to your device’s camera / microphone? Have you encountered any difficulties? Any Chrome annoyance in this department?
