Now we will explain what a virtual private network (VPN) is, what it is for, and how it can be configured on your device. Check out our instructions.

What is a VPN?

As I mentioned in the introduction, the acronym VPN means Virtual Private Network or Virtual Private Network, a network technology that allows you to configure a secure local area network (LAN) connection over a public or unregulated network, such as the Internet, that allows you to communicate at any point (such as from a smartphone and a computer, or between two smartphones) safe and private use of the Internet.

For a fully secure VPN connection, we need this reliable VPN server. The technology behind this type of connection is called “ tunneling ” because it creates a “tunnel” that establishes communication between two points, where data flows. The VPN itself does not store any data, it is stored by the servers or clients that configure the VPN.

One of the main uses of VPN technology is to encapsulate a Private IP into a corporate or company network within a public Internet IP so that employees working from home can connect to office network to access services, origins, servers, and more.

Another commonly used is open WiFi networks from a smartphone, but in most cases, data traffic can be unsafe. Avoid storing or disclosing confidential data while using a third-party VPN.

One of the main uses of VPN is to access restricted websites and services in a region. Applications not available in Brazil can be accessed, for example, through a VPN network.

Also, a private network is naturally more secure when it comes to confidential data transfer via email, for example.

Advantages of VPN

Use different IPs than the one we have

One of the advantages of a VPN connection is the use of an IP address other than the one we are connected to. For example, to download an application that is only available in a specific country or to access a specific channel in a country that is not where we are located.

Good connecting to open networks

On open or free networks, there is a risk that someone connected to the same Wi-Fi network will monitor traffic and steal your passwords. If we use a server connected to a VPN, all data passing through this open network will be encrypted until it reaches the VPN server.

Securely access a local network via the Internet

This is a VPN app for business. By using a VPN connection, you can connect to a local network securely over the Internet.

Disadvantages of VPN

Security: free or paid VPN?

For a fully secure VPN connection, we need to trust the VPN server. Many free VPN services track the traffic data they receive from users. In addition to collecting your passwords (illegally), these services also check usage statistics and browsing profiles that may be sold to third parties, such as advertising agencies and other companies consumers.

VPN services, which are commonly paid for, provide complete privacy and security without having to track data traffic but are advised to read the terms of use beforehand.

Increased data usage slows down browsing speed

When connecting to a VPN, all data is encrypted to increase the amount of data transmitted. In a slow network, this results in slower browsing and if you are connected to your data plan, you will be able to spend your monthly data package more easily.

How to configure a VPN network?

There are two ways to connect to a VPN network: through a third-party application or through native Android-built native support for some networks. We talked about the two processes below.

1. How to configure VPN through an application

Depending on the VPN network you want to use, a dedicated app is the best option. Android does not offer support for open networks on VPN servers, so to use services that are not available in your region (e.g. blocking WhatsApp, for example), an application is the ideal solution.

We recommend Betternet, which has a much simpler interface, is free (with a paid version of the premium), and works well.

Betternet is a much simpler application. All you have to do is download it from the Play Store, confirm the connection request and click “Connect”. No password or login required. The ” key ” icon in the status bar indicates that the service is active.

Keep in mind that many VPN services are uncertain. Avoid banking or disclosing confidential data while using a VPN. An alternative to The Betternet is a Private Tunnel VPN.

2. How to manually configure VPN via native Android support

Android smartphones offer built-in support for configuring PPTP and L2TP VPN networks. It is useful for you to have access to private networks in environments such as work, home, and so on. Just go to the “Settings” menu and then “More” (names may vary depending on the user interface). In this section, you will see a window called VPN. Click here.

Afterward, the notification ” Add VPN ” or simply the “plus” mark appears in the top bar, which you need to click. If you do this, you will be asked for the following information: ” name “, ” Type ” and ” Server address See below what each one contains.

Note:  The VPN settings used in this instruction are only used to describe the process. So, before setting up a VPN, you need to have VPN network configuration data. The VPNBook website, for example, offers such data, however, it may track your network behavior (this is just one example).

Definition

  • name – This category is simply used to distinguish this setting from others. The most common names are “Home”, “Company”, “Office”, and so on.
  • Type – Here you need to select the VPN type we set up. Each variant corresponds to a protocol that has different characteristics and depends on each network. PPTP has a higher level of security, while L2TP and IPsec offer a much higher level of encryption. Find out here what each protocol means and what is safer;
  • Server address: here we can put a DNS or a public IP address. In case we can connect to our home server, it is recommended to use the services of a dynamic DNS. If you want to use the Internet, for example, Google.com can be a DNS.

We will then be able to connect to the VPN network using a username and password that will also need to be provided in advance. Remember, those responsible for VPN provide this information to users (also check the VPNBook website above).

After the connection is made, we will receive a notification on the smartphone. To stop, just click on that notification.
