According to the philosophy of I-Ching, reality is not entirely real. It is closer to a dream or an illusion that rises from the interplay between Yin and Yang.

When you listen to a digital audio file, look at a computer screen or watch the latest blockbuster on your video monitors, you are interpreting a digital representation of reality, not reality itself. In the same way, the I Ching is a representation of reality and its infinite possibilities.

Casting the I Ching

The modern method for casting I Ching uses a series of six coin tosses using three identical coins. The outcome of each toss produces one line of a hexagram. Like a building, the hexagram is assembled from the ground up. The first toss defines the bottom line, the first line in the text interpretations. The sixth toss is the top line. Each line is only one of two options: broken or unbroken.

Each of the six lines is assigned a special meaning according to its relative position to the others in the stack. The six lines are arranged in a stack that is separated into two parts, an upper half and a lower half. This stack forms the basis of the interpretive readings.

Interpreting the Hexagram

The 64 hexagrams that can be cast by the I Ching represent nothing less than human life itself. To interpret the I Ching, each hexagram is accompanied by an explanatory text – in fact, many texts written throughout the ages.
