8 reasons your computer does not connect to the Internet

How to connect your computer to Wi-Fi

Let’s first check that you have connected to Wi-Fi correctly. This is the way to do it, and we just need to make sure that you have tried before we start to find the big toolbox with solutions.

How to do a PC (with Windows 10)

1. Open the start menu
2. Press “Connect” or “Connect”.
3. Select “Wireless network connection”
4. Select the name of your wireless network. It’s typically called the same thing as the back of your router, unless you’ve found something more intelligent to call it.
5. Click OK
Now you would like to be on, and if it doesn’t work, just read on!

How to do it on a Mac

1. Touch the Wi-Fi symbol at the top of the screen (right)
2. Select the network from the list of networks
3. Enter the code
4. Now you should be online.
Again, this doesn’t work you shouldn’t despair. Simply read on, this article is written for you. We just had to make sure you actually tried to connect correctly.

How to connect your computer online via your mobile

With your iPhone, select Settings> Wi-Fi> Select the network> Enter the code.
It’s almost the same way on an Android mobile, and you can certainly find out from the tips above (otherwise youtube).

How to get online when the above does not solve the problem

Now we take the problems one by one and we start with the most typical errors and work our way down the list until we get you online. We start by looking at your internet connection so we are sure there is actually a Wi-Fi network.

1) Check that there is internet on your router

You can check this in several ways. The best thing is to connect an ethernet cable directly from the router to your computer. Thus we find out several things:

Whether there is internet, and whether your computer can connect via a wired connection.
By connecting you directly to the router we piped the wireless wi-fi, and then it should work. If not, we found the error.

Then the error is either on your router or with your ISP. Here’s a guide to setting up your wireless wi-fi properly . If it doesn’t work, call your ISP.

2) Check if you can get on Wi-Fi with other devices

Now that we know that there is actually internet, it’s time to test your wi-fi setup. Check if you can get internet via your mobile, tablet or another computer. If that is the case, we’ve already got the problem to be a problem on your computer.

If you can’t get online with other devices either, it’s probably the setup of your Wi-Fi it is crazy about. Here’s a guide to help you set up your Wi-Fi properly. If you CAN come online with other devices, we need to move on to step 3.

3) Can you find the Wi-Fi network with your computer?

You may be too far away for your computer to pick up the wireless signal. It may also be that there are too many other signals, which means that you cannot get a clear signal. Here you can read about problems with the frequency or problems with noise on the signal from other devices.

If you are too far away, try to get close to the router or access point so you can check if you can get there. If you can, we have solved the problem. Then simply extend your internet signal with an access point so that it can reach the place you want to get online with your computer.

4) Has your computer been online before?

It may be that your laptop or desktop computer is very old and therefore does not have a wireless network card. If so, you have never been able to get online with the machine. If, on the other hand, you have been online earlier with the computer, this is not the problem.

If you have never been online with the machine, then you probably have to buy a wireless network card. You can do that and try again. But if you have been online online with the same computer, then we have to dig a little further.

5) Check your computer’s network settings

Your computer may have a conflict with another IP address on your network. If so, be sure to assign a new IP to your computer. You can only do this if the network uses static IP addresses. It may be another computer, printer, etc. on the network that already uses the IP that you are trying to log on with.

In that case, you can’t get on because all devices on a Wi-Fi must have unique I-addresses. If you use dynamic IP addresses, you may just have to restart your computer. You can read more about static and dynamic IPs here.

6) Check firewalls and restrictions

There may be a network constraint that limits the number of devices that can be connected at the same time. This may mean that you cannot access the Internet connection if there are already one or more computers or mobiles on it.

A Firewall is set up to keep extraneous traffic out of your network. Here is a guide to see if there are extraneous people using your wi-fi. Sometimes it happens that a firewall takes too hard, and then it blocks you out instead of the extraneous “guests”.

It may also be that a blocking has been set up for your unique IP address. If so, it will be created manually and you will need to get hold of the person who created your wireless internet.

Have you come online again?

I hope we got you online. Otherwise, you might need the help of a tech-savvy companion or a professional network administrator who can help you. You can also call your ISP and see if the support is in a good mood.

It is typically not their job to get you online, they just need to deliver the internet to your internet box, and then their job is done.

To turn Wi-Fi on and off on your computer

If you want to connect or disconnect Wi-Fi on your computer, you can do it quite easily.
It can be an advantage if you want to be absolutely sure of being offline or if you have accidentally switched it off. Because in that case you will not come to your Wi-Fi until you turn it on again!

How to turn on wi-fi on Mac computers

You must click on the small network icon at the top of your screen. It looks like it:

When you click it you can turn it on and off. It should look like the icon above for it to be turned on.
Once it is done you must be able to get online again.

How to turn on Wi-Fi on a PC (Windows 10)

With Windows 10, it has become a lot easier to turn on and off the wi-fi connection. Here’s how you do it: Click on the purple square bubble that you find next to the clock at the bottom of the screen. Once you have clicked on it you can turn your network on and off. Make sure it’s plugged in so you’re told it’s gone.
