Game of Thrones
Genre: fantasy, romance, drama, action
Game of Thrones is a genre mix-up and also straightforward genre break, but also one of the most popular HBO series. It combines masterful romance, drama, action into the fantasy world of Westeros.
It draws on a huge number of genres, and it has a wealth of interesting characters. Therefore, it is nothing to say that the series is loved by as many viewers and reviewers as it is.
Game of Thrones is about a battle for the throne between the various houses in Westeros, each with their own values. Honor, gold, strength, cunning. Game of Thrones is a battle between these values portrayed through one of the finest series productions to be found today.
The Wire
Genre: the crime drama
The Wire is one of the holy classics of HBO series. Although it did not receive much attention when the first season rolled out in 2002, it was later named one of the best TV series ever by both critics and viewers.
Throughout 5 seasons, The Wire follows 5 different parts of Baltimore, Maryland, depicting, among other things, the illegal drug trade, school system, and city government.
Common to all seasons of the series is that it focuses on the individual individual in the city and how the urban individual is influenced by the city’s institutions.
If you really like series, then this series is a must-see. It, along with The Sopranos and Six Feet Under (both of which can be seen on HBO), are some important cornerstones of how we make and watch series in 2018.
The Deuce
Genre: period drama
The Deuce is a three-part series, the first of which premiered at HBO Nordic earlier this year. It follows the rise of the now legal porn industry in the 1970s in New York.
James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal play in this tough but aesthetically beautiful series that explores the turbulence that the porn industry created in and outside of various power systems.
The series depicts the beginnings of the porn industry that is still alive and well today. The series portrays the power structure that goes on behind the scenes, and it doesn’t put its fingers in the middle when it comes to the billionaire sex industry’s exploitation of the female body in particular.
The Deuce is one of the newer HBO series, and the second season is expected to be right on the stairs at HBO Nordic as it premiered on US HBO in the fall of 2018.
The Vampire Diaries
Genre: horror-fantasy, romance, drama, young-adult
The Vampire Diaries follow the tremendous success of the supernatural creatures vampires, who for the first time got their connection to the young-adult genre in the popular (and also very scathing) Twilight books and movies.
However, The Vampire Diaries and Twilight do not take place in the same universe, for The Vampire Diaries is a series based on its own book series of the same name. The series is arguably also one of the most popular HBO series, especially among the young viewers.
In the series, we follow Elena, who falls in love with a vampire and thus gains insight into the supernatural part of the city of Mystic Falls. As the seasons unfold, you gain insight into the history of the city and its connection to the supernatural beings.
The Walking Dead
Genre: horror drama, dystopian fiction, zombie series
Among good HBO series we find The Walking Dead, where cop Rick wakes up after a coma and realizes that the world has been taken over by zombies and that he is apparently the only survivor. The series is the action-packed and dystopian conception of the world as a (almost) human-abandoned place.
Rick then searches for Atlanta to find his wife and child, and as the seasons roll on we find out more and more about this dystopian and cruel world that the protagonists must learn to survive in.
At the same time, they must maintain their own humanity in a world filled with living dead, and also finding a way among themselves to live in this world where there is no longer a state or other structure above for them to conform to.
The series is based on a cartoon series of the same name. There are currently 7 seasons to watch on HBO Nordic by The Walking Dead. If you’re into horror dramas and zombie movies, then this series is definitely for you.
The Sopranos
Genre: drama
The Sopranos premiered as early as 1999 and ran for six seasons until its end in 2006. The Sopranos received much praise from the reviewers that praised it for its screenplay and screenplay performance.
The Sopranos were to pave the way for high-quality productions of the many HBO series that came in the 21st century.
In The Sopranos, we follow mafia boss Tony Soprano, who tries to balance his work as a criminal mafia boss with his own family and private life. The action takes place in New Jersey, which is also the backdrop for the mafia’s criminal activity.
The Sopranos were not only loved by reviewers, but have also won the hearts of audiences and have become an important part of 2000s pop culture. Then you sign up to be series-savvy and series-lover, then it’s impossible to miss one of the best HBO series; The Sopranos.
Vikings
Genre: historical drama, action adventure
The Vikings are inspired by the stories of a Danish 9th century Viking hero, Ragnar Lodborg. Here we follow him all the way from his early rise through the Scandinavian power systems from living as a peasant and warrior to applying for permission to sail across the sea to plunder and take land.
The historical Ragnar has gone into the history books as one of the first men to want to plunder farther east and should thus have a great influence on the way we think about Vikings today.
The series has been a huge audience success and it is still running on season 5 at the moment as we continue to follow Ragnar’s children up through the Viking Age. Right now you can watch 4 seasons of the brutal, but of course goddamn, Vikings on HBO Nordic.
The Handmaid’s Tale
Genre: drama, dystopian fiction
The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the newer but at the same time best HBO series. It premiered in 2017, but already received much praise from reviewers as well as viewers with the first season.
In The Handmaid’s Tale, we follow a woman Offred in a dystopian world, and through flashbacks we get to see how a world not far from our own could evolve into the rule depicted in The Handmaid’s Tale.
The premise of the series is that more and more women are barren. Therefore, the fertile maids clothed in red must serve the lusts of their master, now that his own barren woman cannot.
The Handmaid’s Tale is an important narrative about power structures and women’s bodies, which is unfortunately echoed in many historical accounts of, among other things, the treatment of slave women. The series is based on a 1985 book by Margaret Atwood, and it is not for the delicate series souls.
Billions
Genre: drama
In the Billions series, we follow two ambitious, but also opposing men, each chasing the 21st century American dream. The series is a contemporary drama depicting the wealth, corruption and power it takes to reach the top of today’s society.
The series’ two protagonists, the powerful state attorney and the billions of billionaires, are played by Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis in an interesting dynamic between two sides of the same coin.
The series is thus an unwelcome mirror of our own contemporary set up from the inside of New York’s political and economic headquarters. A headquarters that requires a master spinner to direct around. There are currently 3 seasons of Billions on HBO.
manifesto
Genre: thriller, drama
Manifest is one of the brand new HBO series that has premiered in 2018 with its first season. Here we see a passenger plane experiencing turbulence on that route from Jamaica to New York to find that the plane and its passengers have been reported missing for over 5 years when they land again.
Manifesto is a fiction drama that follows the various passengers who now have to cope with the fact that all their loved ones have grown up and changed, all while the passengers begin to experience hallucinations and guiding voices.
The first season of The Manifest can be seen now on HBO, and it’s supposed to be renewed for another season as well. Here’s a great opportunity to jump on the bandwagon before some of your friends sneeze on this new HBO series.
The Office US
Genre: comedy, mockumentary
The Office US started as an American version of the British series The Office. But slowly The Office US slipped away from the British version of the series and became its very own. Today, there are even many who prefer the American version of The Office.
In The Office, we have, funny enough, an office. A very ordinary office responsible for the sale and production of paper in a world that seems to be increasingly paperless. But what sets the series apart from a trivial office job is the characters and the structure of the series as a mockumentary.
The Office is a strong comedy series that is loved by many viewers, and for good reason. It perfectly balances elements that we all know from our own workplace with the fun and cross-border – often in the form of boss Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell.
Westworld
Genre: sci-fi, western
No, you didn’t read wrong. Westworld is both a sci-fi series and a western series and is also one of the most viewed HBO series. The majority of the action takes place in a sort of future amusement park for adults called Westworld.
The Westworld Park is based on a hyper-masculine dream of getting back to the old Western, where you could have tea as you please. The park is full of robots, which visitors must treat as they like.
But the robots are programmed with an artificial intelligence that begins to revolt against the guests’ treatment. This means that those who pull the cords from above must be interfered with.
Westworld explores the boundaries between robots and humans and criticizes man’s unstoppable consumption and desires for power and control. The series is both intelligent and immensely engaging.
Girls
Genre: drama, comedy, romance, chick-flick
Girls is a modern interpretation of the story of four young women trying to get in through their 20s and 30s all while juggling love, friendships, mental well-being, and the city’s other struggles.
Does that sound familiar? Girls is inspired by the series Sex in the City (which is also available on HBO). But where Sex and the City had four perfectly imperfect women in the lead roles, no matter what held together, Girls portrayed the friendship of women in even more dimensions.
The series is directed by Lena Dunham, who also starred as Hannah – a young and funny woman who struggles to emerge as a writer and, moreover, her own insecurities and mental health issues. The series has received much praise for its portrayal of strong and feminine women in addition to its focus on body positivism.
