How to Enable End to End Messenger Encryption

As you may remember, Messenger got the end-to-end encryption option in 2016, when it was still called Facebook Messenger and Meta was still Facebook. Now things have changed, but Messenger still doesn’t fully support End-to-End encryption for all its chats & voice/video calls.

If you’re wondering what End-to-End encryption is and why anyone would want End-to-End encryption. Well, End-to-End encryption is basically a security feature that ensures that the data transferred between the sender and recipient cannot be read or changed secretly by any third party.

Security features are very useful for reducing the risk of man-in-the-middle attacks where an attacker might try to access/modify your data.

So, End-to-End encryption is very important, and it has become a standard feature on communication services, applications & sites.

Steps on how to enable end to end messenger encryption

As we know, that by default, End-to-End encryption is not enabled for chats & calls on Messenger. However, Facebook gives you two options to enable End-to-End encryption manually. So, here’s how to activate end-to-end Messenger encryption.

1) ActivateVanish Mode

Vanish Mode is very different from the chat options we usually find on Telegram. When you send a message in Vanish Mode, so the message will be deleted automatically after you leave the chat.

Basically, it is a feature that allows us to send temporary messages to our friends. However, Vanish Mode in Messenger is now only available in select countries.

To enterVanish Modein Messenger, you need to open the Chat Window and swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Your friend will also need to use the latest version of Messenger to enter Vanish mode.

2) Enable Secret Conversations

IfVanish Modeis not available, you can use the Secret Conversations feature to enable end to end encryption. This is a feature that allows you to send messages that disappear in chat. We can send almost anything in chat, including Photos, Videos, file attachments, and more.

1. First of all, open the Messenger app on your Android device and open a chat window.

2. Please,tap the name of the person you want to chat with to open their profile. Alternatively, tap the (i) button as shown in the image below.

3. On the user’s profile, scroll down and tapGo to Secret Conversation.

4. Next, you will see theSecret Conversation window.

5. If you want, you can even tapthe timer iconin text mode to send a disappearing message.

This is how to enable end to end Messenger encryption in the Messenger application. Now you can chat without worrying about someone reading your messages secretly.
