How to Setup a New Sonos Speaker

Setup a New Sonos Speaker: Bluetooth speakers are so 2014. Although they are great on a portable basis, they only have an effective range of around 30 feet.

Even worse, you can usually only control one Bluetooth speaker from one device at a time, and audio quality isn’t particularly good over Bluetooth. However, that’s where Sonos shines.

Sonos is a smart speaker streaming system that lets you add more speakers on the go. So you can fill any room in your house with music while controlling it from any computer, smartphone or tablet.

The nice thing about Sonos is that you can add as many speakers as you want on your computer, smartphone or tablet by simply connecting to your existing router.

If you want to extend the reach of your powerful music collection on your desktop PC or hop around the house while playing music on your iPhone, all you need is a Sonos player and the app that lets you stream music anywhere in your house is ready to inject the money for it.

In this guide, we’ll show you how easy it is to use a Windows PC, Mac, iPhone, or Android device to make all the settings.

How to set up your Sonos system on Windows and Mac

We will combine the Windows and Mac setups because they are almost identical and save some system-specific elements. The first thing you obviously want to do is download the Sonos software from their website.

Once it’s downloaded, install it on your system as usual.
In Windows, you may first need to allow Sonos software to access your firewall if it is enabled. Go ahead and allow access.

On a Mac, you definitely need to enter your administrator’s password. On Windows, this depends on whether your user account control is configured to notify you when an app makes changes to your computer.

When you are finished, select “Set up a new system”.

We do not use other Sonos products to set up our speaker. Therefore we choose “Standard Setup”.

There are two ways to set up your Sonos speaker. If you’re using a desktop PC and don’t have WiFi (meaning you’re connected to your router using an old Ethernet cable), make sure your Sonos device is also connected to the router via Ethernet.

If you have Wi-Fi like we do on our Mac, the wireless setup process starts automatically. You only need to connect to the Sonos player via Ethernet if you don’t have Wi-Fi capabilities on your computer.

Regardless of whether you are setting up a wired or wireless device, you must select the device type. In our case, we’ll set up a Sonos PLAY: 1 speaker.

The next important step involves simultaneously pressing and releasing two buttons on the device you are setting up.

When connected wirelessly, your computer connects directly to the device, so you are disconnected from your normal wireless network. Therefore, you want to make sure that you are not doing any connection-dependent work. If you are connecting via cable, this does not apply and you will proceed to the final configuration.

If you are connected to your Sonos device via Wi-Fi, you need to tell it how to connect to your network. Enter the password for your network.

Whether wired or wireless, you decide where your speaker is. You can change this at any time by moving the speaker.

After configuring the player, make sure you register it so that you can continue to update your Sonos software and add streaming services. If you don’t register it now, you can do so at any time later by clicking Manage> Check for Software Updates.

Now that your Sonos player is configured and registered, you can add your locally stored music collection or set up your library later.

To do this, OS X needs your admin name and password again.

User Account Control is likely to appear on Windows. Choose “Yes”.

When you have your Sonos software aligned with the location of your music collection, everything is added and you can play your music anywhere in your home where a Sonos player is located.

How to set up your Sonos system on an iOS or Android device

The setup routine for Android or iOS devices is practically identical to that on a PC or Mac and almost identical. Therefore we will combine both systems and point out differences.

The first step is to download the software from their respective stores. On an iPhone or iPad, this would come from the App Store.

And on an Android device, you need to get it from the Play Store. You can also download Sonos software for Amazon Kindle devices if you have one.

After you’ve installed the app on your device, the remaining steps are about the same as in the desktop version. If you have already set up your Sonos system elsewhere, you can simply connect, otherwise tap on “Set up a new Sonos system”.

Since we do not use any special Sonos devices to connect our player, we would like to choose “Standard Setup”.

Your new player will then be configured to set up on your mobile device.

Wi-Fi setup is similar on Android and iOS, except that you do an extra step on iOS.

The first thing you have to do, however, is the all-important push-button ceremony.

If you set up your player on an iPad or iPhone, your experience will be different from Android users.

You must exit the Sonos setup and open the settings. Then tap on “Wi-Fi”.

In the Wi-Fi settings, tap the “Sonos” access point.

Then go back to the Sonos software to continue. You are now connected directly to the Sonos player.

If you are using Android, only the same screen that you see on our iPad below is shown.

Once you’ve entered your WiFi password and tap “Next”, it’s time to tell the player what they’re called. Again we call it Office. ”

To add another Sonos player, tap “Not Now”.

At this point you should register your Sonos device. If you are considering skipping this part, keep in mind that you cannot update your Sonos software or add streaming services.

If you want to register later, you can do so in the Sonos app by tapping “Settings” and then “Online Update”.

From here, your Sonos player is configured so that you can add it from other devices. Regardless of which device the Sonos software is installed on, connect to an existing device instead of setting up a new one. You can now add your music to the Sonos app and any streaming services you may subscribe to.
