Although today almost all mobile phone plans include unlimited SMS / MMS, the number of times these messages are being sent is declining in favor of online instant messaging applications. These offer more customization possibilities and are often available on all platforms.
The Whatsapp service, for example, is heavily exploited and its users may wish to save their conversations online to retrieve them on a new smartphone.
How to sync your WhatsApp messages on Google Drive?
In anticipation of the acquisition of a new smartphone , or simply to avoid losing data in case of breakage, WhatsApp can make a backup of all conversations, photos, voice notes, and videos on a Google Drive account.
It is important to note right now that messages and media recorded online on Google’s servers are not protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.
- To get started, open the WhatsApp app. On the home page, click on the three vertical dots to expand the menu.
- In the menu, select “Settings”.
- Open the “Discussions” settings.
- Now click on “Save Discussions” to enter the part that interests us.
If you’ve never made a backup before, click “Back up to Google Drive” and follow the steps to set up your account. Know that you can always go back on your choices by independently modifying each of these parameters, as on the screen below.
By clicking “Save to Google Drive“, you set the frequency at which you want to update the data.
By clicking on ” Google Account “, you can choose one of the accounts installed on your device, or any other Google Account you have access codes for. WhatsApp conversations synced to Google Drive are not counted in the calculation of the storage space used.
Remember the username and password entered, because you will have to enter them to restore your data from a new smartphone.
In the main discussion backup page, you can trigger Google Drive sync manually at any time by clicking the green “Save” button. The operation continues in the background, and you can use your device normally.
A final parameter offers the choice to include or exclude videos from the backup. They can represent an important part of the data, as in our example (4.7 GB of video for 6.3 GB of total backup).
To restore your WhatsApp session and all your conversations in your new phone, everything is automated. Just enter the same Google Account that you saved, and enter the same phone number in WhatsApp. Your chats will be displayed quickly, and the application will gradually add the media files.
